Breast CA 3Day--Chicago--Aug. 10-12, 2007,
$5.6m 2000 Walkers
This walk was dedicated to Julie S. a friend and long time supporter
of the breast cancer cause who passed away last week. May her
memory be as a blessing.
It seems a little strange that I am writing this on Tues. after the
walk. Usually I write the next day, but our family came to Chicago
and we have been behaving as tourists in this wonderful city, and I
haven't had a minute to myself.
We arrived in Chicago on Thur. As usual, I was very nervous,
especially since it was the first 3Day of my walk season. Actually
I probably was justified in feeling a little apprehensive. As it
turned out, the first day of the walk was 23.3 miles; the second day
was 22.9 and the 3rd day was 18.9 miles. The total was over 67
miles according to my pedometer. Now, to go along with the long
days, the weather was about 93 degrees all days and the humidity was
extremely high also. So needless to say, all of those factors did
push me to my limits! But, you know what, I finished the walk and
Mon I felt just fine! (however, I could not have walked another
long day on Mon.!) I did walk around as a tourist though.
I saw Lori and Matt. They live in Boston and I wrote about them
last year. They met on a 3Day event several years ago and married
the week before the 3Day last year. It was wonderful to see
them--and to see them happy.
They seem like a perfectly matched couple. You both have touched my
Also, I saw Sherry. I remembered her face and her story! However,
I could not remember her name. She is a 3x survivor who had a stem
cell transplant 8 years ago. She is a 10 yr. survivor and is
walking in 3 events this year to celebrate her 3x diagnosis and to
celebrate her 10 yrs. as a survivor. Go Sherry! You are why we all
need to keep walking.
I saw my friend Carolyn from Texas. She was crewing this event and
will be crewing some Avon events for the rest of the year. She is a
riot (funny!) and I get such a kick out of talking with her. Can't
wait to see you again very soon!
It was fun seeing my old 3Day buddies from last year and the many,
many walkers and crew from previous years. Though I am certainly
not good about names, our conversations mean a great deal to me.
That is what is so special about doing these walks---talking to
people and listening to their stories.
We will be flying on to Cleveland on Thur. One of my son in laws
will be there on business and will be joining Bob to put up signs.
In the meantime, we will be visiting the American Girl Store
tomorrow with 3 of our granddaughters! I am sure that will be the
highlight of their trip!
Thank you for coming to my website. Thank you for all of your
