BARBARA JO KIRSHBAUM
2017 AVON WALK FOR BREAST CANCER
San Francisco avon39 raised $3.1m 500 new walkers 65 degrees July 8-9, 2017
Have been home in upland for about 1/2 hour! I have a need to shower and unpack and begin laundry; however, my need to write my journal will come first....
I want to thank a few people who came to the walk to support us.....daughter Lori (who did signage with Debra); Micha to visit Sara, Sharon B. to support her daughter but would have been there even if Jen wasn't walking and thank you for the delicious choc. chip banana bread! Laurie and John from so. cal, who are my 18 yr. walker stalkers! Joey and Paul, who was my S.F. coach in 2002, Kristen, Debra's friend from elementary school, Loved seeing Rochelle and Jan, our friends from New Zealand. Cassie and her mom Gail, who went to college with Debra.....all of you warmed my heart and reminded me of the importance of the relationships in life that I treasure......thank you, thank you, thank you
Next thing I want to share is about Sara, my granddaughter, who walked in this event....it was her 7th b.c. event even though she is only 18 yrs. old (4 yrs. on youth crew and walks in s.b., Boston, and s.f.)....so we are in the car driving home this morning and she is talking about walking chicago and another walk next year and I am telling her she needs to let me decide where we can go.....she was excited with the $9000 she has already raised these last 7 yrs. and i suggested that since she was so 'wound up' she should write her fundraising letter for 2018 that would share the excitement and enthusiasm was experiencing this morning .....in 20 minutes she had written the most incredible letter....be on the look out for Sara Johnson, Avon39 2018
The weather was perfect for walking in the 60's, especially wonderful since the weather in upland was over 100! Saturday morning at the opening ceremonies there was a beautiful speech about me that I had no expectation of.....the reason being that it was my 150th long distance walk for breast cancer and I was very honored......I think one of my family put it a video of that on facebook.....
This walk was what everyone thinks the s.f. walk is like, but has never been before!......we crossed the golden gate both directions after a huge uphill to begin the morning....when we came back across the bridge that rest of the day was lots of up and down....I elected to only do the first part so did about 16 miles and 13 miles on day two....my legs and back really felt the strain but nothing serious....I will mend in a day or two with less stress to the joints!
I met Margot who has done 18 walks in 16 yrs.....she has raised $157,000! she was diagnosed in 2001 and talked about the insurance issues for her at that time....that is one of the reasons we must keep raising money for those in need without adequate insurance....good news is the Margot will be a grandmother for the first time next month....congratulations!
Kim was doing her 2nd walk....last year she easily raised her $1800 and this year she has raised $3500....we spoke about a way to get more donations after the walk....she told me that at 36 yrs old her insurance would not approve a mammogram and talks as if she had not received a grant from the county for an ultrasound at that time she maybe would not be alive by the time she was 40 and the insurance would approve it....it is important to her to help others.....keep up the good work and fundraising...
I spoke with Michelle who did her first b.c. event in 1998 and has walked and crewed ever since....her goal is to help anyone who is needing anything at all and she loves to see people achieve their goals....she also coaches track and field for the special Olympics....
Chin was a woman i have probably written about after every s.f. walk....I met her 7 yrs ago on her first walk....I have no explanation for the connection that was made with chin but I look forward to her finding me every year and bringing me up to date on her life and family.....since I didn't see her on Saturday I thought maybe she was no longer walking...at one of the stops she came up to me and with a big bear hug told me she had taken a fall on Saturday but was walking on Sunday and I was so happy to see her and reconnect.....one of the many special moments for me....she always talks about my having inspired her to do her second walk that has now continued every year...
Thank you for reading my s.f. 2017 journal.....always a reminder that if you would like to support my efforts on behalf of the avon39 you can go to my website: www.bjkcounselor.com and not to be concerned that I have completed a walk since my fundraising is year round!
Also a reminder of regular self exams and regular mammograms....early detection is the best protection....
With so much love and appreciation,
"I walk because I can't walk away"
