December 2017

Dear Donors,

There is no doubt that life has it’s ups and downs and not always things we have no control over!  As of last Friday the Avon Corporation announced that they would no longer be sponsoring the Avon 39.   For me, that is the end of a 20 yr. commitment that began in 1998, the year I turned 60.  However, during these 20 yrs. of walking and raising money for the fight against breast cancer, what became most important to me was ‘how much money could I raise?’  I am proud of having walked in 151 long distance walks, raised over $2, 080,000, and walked over 7500 miles. In receiving the news about the end of the walks it made me realize that it was time to change course.  I contacted the president of the San Antonio Regional Hospital Foundation, my local hospital which has received grants from the Avon39 totaling over $1/2m…..I told him, Mike Tracey, that I would like to keep raising money for the breast center at the hospital in the same grassroots manner that I have for the Avon39 (i.e. pink envelope, pink letter, personal note, breast cancer stamp and mailed to me so I could then write a thank you note and keep track of my amazing donors).  I am so excited because all of this is possible.  I requested that all money I raise will go 100 percent to the Women’s Breast Center and 100 percent will go to help the underserved!  Everyone of my donors who I have spoken to in the last few days is excited and on board to continue donating to my new beneficiary……All grants given at the 2017 walks will still be given to those beneficiaries.  Those of you who have donated in the last month will have the option to allow it to remain and be granted to Avon39 beneficiaries or your donation will be returned to you in the manner it was sent i.e. check or credit card.  I hope that those of you have donated have received a letter from Avon39 with directions r.e. your donation.

I am hoping that you, my amazing donors, will follow my fundraising efforts to support the San Antonio Regional Hospital Women’s Breast and Imaging Center.

I am enclosing an envelope if you choose to donate now before the end of the year.   Make out your check to SAHF_WBIC and mail  it to me and I will turn it in to the Foundation office.  If you have any questions don’t hesitate to call me.

My ‘formal’ pink campaign will begin in February.

I can’t thank you all enough for your support in the fight against breast cancer for these last 20 years.   As a group, we have been amazing raising more money than other group in the country. I have had an amazing ride that began with Bob by my side and then it became about my walking in his honor.  My family has all been part of this and all will continue to help as we continue our grassroots effort in the fight against breast cancer.

With appreciation,

Barbara Jo Kirshbaum
