January, 2007

Dear Friends,

This year 213,000 women and 1400 men will hear their doctor say, “You have breast cancer”.  I do not want those words to be a death sentence.  That is one of the reasons I am walking for the 10th year and raising money to fight breast cancer.

I am walking for my family, my friends, your family, your friends, and YOU. I am walking to challenge this 68 year old body.

 My walking goal will be 15 long distance walks around the country.  That is 37 days, 740 miles, 370 hours, and 1,480,000 steps! My walk schedule for 2007 will be: DC (Avon—May 5-6); Boston (Avon—May 19-20); Chicago (Avon—June 2-3); Denver (Avon—June 23-24); San Francisco (Avon--July 7-8); Chicago (3Day—Aug. 10-12); Cleveland (3Day--August 17-19); Twin Cities (3Day--August 24-26); Seattle (3Day—Sept. 7-9); L.A. (Avon—Sept. 15-16); NY (Avon—Oct. 6-7); Atlanta (3Day—Oct. 12-14); Charlotte (Avon—Oct. 20-21); AZ (3Day—Nov. 2-4); and SD (3Day—Nov. 9-11).

I am continuing to fundraise for breast cancer to raise awareness, so that the 1 million women walking around with undetected breast cancer will get mammograms and learn about self examinations.  I am fundraising so that money for research will help create treatments and protocols for the 2 million survivors already diagnosed and the 213,000 new cases that will be diagnosed this year.  I am fundraising to raise monies that will provide assistance and access to care for individuals and families fighting this disease. I am fundraising for the Avon Walks for Breast Cancer (Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade) and the Breast Cancer 3Day (Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust) because those foundations are on the cutting edge to reach those goals and to bring an end breast cancer.

My personal goal: “ONE HUNDRED WALKS/ONE MILLION DOLLARS”! Since 1998 I have walked in 70 long distance walks and raised $677,000. My fundraising goal this year is $323,000, which is much more than the required $1800 for each of the Avon Walks for Breast Cancer and the required $2200 for each of the Breast Cancer 3Day Walks.

With all of that said, I am asking you to partner with me in this effort.  I will do the walking, but I need your help reaching $1,000,000. Would you consider making a donation? The gains that have been made over the years in fighting this dreaded disease are because so many have generously supported this effort.  Your donations  will save lives and make a difference.

Enclosed you will find forms for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and the Breast Cancer 3Day.  Please fill in whichever foundation you prefer to support (or both!), and enclose your check(s) and return it to me in the enclosed envelope.  You may also donate online by going to my website, www.bjkcounselor.com and click ‘donate’.

I wear a banner on my back while I am walking.  The banner has blue ribbons and white ribbons with the name of each of my sponsors.  I also wear pink ribbons with the names of the people you would like me to walk in honor/memory of.  Please write their names on the bottom of this letter and return it to me.

Please remind all of the women in your life about their yearly mammogram and regular self examination.  Early detection is our best protection.

Thank you for joining me: “ONE HUNDRED WALKS/ONE MILLION DOLLARS”.

With appreciation,

Barbara Jo Kirshbaum
